Detox Diet –Not a Diet to Help Lose Weight
A Detoxification Process
A detox diet is not a traditional weight loss diet
and shouldn’t be considered
as such. It is a short-term process that some people choose to undergo which
rids the body of unwanted toxins which pile up over time. Although this
diet may help lose weight, it is not designed or made
for that purpose, nor for cues or instruction on
how to lose weight.
Toxins come from water, chemically prepared or altered food and air. Once
in the body, they are processed by organs such as the liver and kidneys. These
organs then release the toxins through sweat, urine and feces.
Those who support this toxin-ridding diet say that due to stress and
dehydration, toxins don’t leave our bodies when they should, as such, can
exacerbate headaches, tiredness, nausea and skin conditions. Therefore, the
general idea with these diets is to put your body
through a process of eliminating the pent-up toxins by greatly reducing the
amount of toxins consumed.
A detoxification diet typically involves a liquid diet for 1-2 days, followed by
4-5 days of reintroducing whole foods such as organic fruits, vegetables and
brown rice. After a week, you further reintroduce other foods with the exception
of sugars, eggs, red meats, wheat and packaged foods. Depending on the diet, the
above items are then brought back in over time.
Detoxification diets should not be tried or considered without first consulting
a doctor or registered dietitian in light of abrupt change they bring into a
diet.
