The Dr Atkins Diet Plan -Not a Low Fat Diet
A Counter Cultural Diet
For years, the majority of the weight
loss business was preaching the benefits of the low fat diet until the Dr
Atkins diet plan came along. For the first time ever, Dr Atkins was telling
everyone to forget about low fat diet and
embrace a low carbohydrate diet –or
as some would call it, a high protein diet.
Initially, the Atkins diet was counter
cultural because the diet industry’s norm was low fat. Thus, when
someone like Atkins came and challenged that thinking, a diet revolution
occurred. His philosophy was that two-thirds of calories could come from fat. As
such, he crafted an eating plan devoid of sugar and full of protein.
Over the years however, the Atkins diet company realized that it’s hard for
people to completely give up carbs. Not only have we been conditioned to eat and
enjoy carbs, but let’s face it –they taste good too. Therefore, in recent years,
the company has come out with an extensive line of food products and supplements
to satisfy the carb and sweet cravings low-carbers desire. With everything from
pancake mix to chocolate peanut butter cups, these foods gave a way for Atkins
followers to enjoy carbs without sabotaging their diets.
This diet plan does work for weight loss; however, the difficulty is staying on
it for a long period of time. Because it is so restrictive, people find it too
hard to sustain and end up giving up or trying a different diet. Therefore,
before this diet is initiated it’s important to closely evaluate your eating
habits and lifestyle to see if it’s a plan that you’d want to try.
