The Cornerstones of Healthy Dieting
Back to the Basics
Healthy dieting is a widely spoken of but often overlooked topic when it comes
to weight loss programs. People seem to be more concerned with the latest diet of the
moment than fitness and nutrition or
the calories per day they consume. The
cornerstones of healthy dieting require
getting back to the basics.
The first way to get back to the basics is strip out all the highly processed
and artificial foods we eat. Our culture has come to view Diet Coke as healthy
when in actual fact it’s simply a chemical-filled carbonated drink. To avoid
pitfalls like Diet Coke and the like, shop for natural healthy foods on the
perimeter of the grocery store and stock up on produce, low fat dairy, lean
meats and fish as well as whole grains.
The second way to get back to the basics is to choose to exercise. Before cars
were invented people were more active and we can still be active today by
making the concerted choice. For example, take the stairs instead of the
elevator and chose an exercise regime that works for you. Whether it is
swimming, walking, running or chair aerobics, there’s lots of fun and
heart-pumping activities to
be tried.
The third way to get back to the basics piggybacks on the first basic
cornerstone. One common denominator in most
celebrity diets is the absence of sugar. Because sugar is part of many junk
foods as well as desserts and specialty coffees, it’s easy to eat copious amounts
without even realizing it. Consciously cutting back on sugar can be difficult at
first, but not all hope is lost, it’s possible to get your natural sugar fill in
fruits.
Sometimes it’s easy for our diets to get off-track. All we need is a little
reminder or nudge to eat healthy and maintain a better lifestyle. Chose
nutritious foods and fitness as the main cornerstones of a healthy diet and
hopefully the right day to day decisions will fall out of these important
principals.
