How Low Carb Diets Work with a Weight Loss Plan
Why the Spotlight on a Low Carbohydrate Diet?
There is always a fad in the weight loss
business. Just like fashion, trends come and
go with different years. One trend that’s been highly visible in the diet
industry is
low carb diets. There is now a whole
sub-industry build around low carbohydrate
diet products. But why the spotlight on
reducing this central food group from our diets? For the sake of
permanent weight loss? To elevate a trendy
weight loss plan?
Diets which focus on reduced carbohydrate intake have come into social
consciousness for a reason. Given that carbohydrates are typically the cheapest
of the 4 food groups, people are drawn to them for obvious reasons. Another
other reason why carbohydrates are so popular is because most junk food falls
under this category and most people can’t resist it once and awhile. In
addition, carbs are easy to grab and provide an immediate satisfaction once
eaten; giving people the impression they are full.
For all these reasons and more, carbs have become such an large part of our
diets that it’s possible to go through and entire day
only to have eaten carbs –no fruits and veggies, no meats and no dairy.
Because of the carb-saturation trend, people caught on to the imbalanced
and unhealthy nature of over-eating items from this food group –and hence the
birth of the low/no carb diet.
Originally these diets were birthed to bring people back to
eating healthy, balanced meals. Although
because these diets have risen to such an unprecedented popularity, people are
now petrified of eating one potato for fear of diet disaster and massive weight
gain –which of course will not happen by eating one potato.
So where’s the balance? Well the answer to
weight loss management is a
balanced, healthy diet –carbs and all. As with anything, as long as carbs are
eaten in moderation, they will not be the source of diet disaster.
